Overall App Review

4.8
SM Rating

Our editorial team independently develops Smart Money’s ratings. Our proprietary scoring formula evaluates multiple factors, such as key differentiators, fees, rewards, customer support, and unique benefits.

The FlexJob app makes our top list of Money Making apps. If you're looking for a gateway to the gig economy, FlexJobs can be a one-stop shop. Our team thinks the desktop version offers the best user interface, but the apps support your on-the-go job monitoring. FlexJobs has a relatively low monthly subscription fee, making it a premium service relative to some of its peers. However, we believe the vetting process that FlexJobs offers makes the subscription fee worth it.

Best for: The FlexJobs website and app are ideal if you're looking for the best remote full-time or part-time side hustles.

Favorite feature: You can filter for 100% remove, hybrid, or even in-person opportunities. The job location preferences selection makes your search exceptionally curated.

Why we liked it: Our team found the signup process to be extremely straightforward. We appreciate that the signup process requires a minimum commitment of $2.95 for the 14-day trial. Since there is no free option for this platform, it is intended only for serious job seekers. However, it gives you access to over 150,000 remote opportunities. We think it's well worth the price of admission.

Best For: Finding Remote and Freelance Work

Success: Secured Over 10 Million Remote Jobs

Looking for a reliable way to find remote and flexible work opportunities without the stress of sifting through scams and low-paying gigs? FlexJobs has become one of the most trusted platforms for professionals who want a more flexible work schedule.

FlexJobs has been helping job seekers find their perfect fit since 2007, so we chose to review the app. Prior users really enjoy its features, and the FlexJobs app boasts a 4.2 ranking on the App Store and 3.3 on Google Play, with over 100,000 downloads.[1][2] Our team signed up for a 14-day full-access account on the desktop version and downloaded the mobile app to test its functionality, assess what we liked, and determine how you might benefit from it. Here's what we found.

What Is FlexJobs?

FlexJobs is a subscription-based job search platform that curates listings for remote, part-time, freelance, and flexible-schedule positions. The company partners with over 10,500 employers, ranging from major corporations to small businesses. These employers list jobs in over 50 career categories, including customer service, writing, education, healthcare, and software development.[3]

According to a survey conducted by the U.S. Career Institute, over 95% of workers want some hybrid or work-from-home schedule.[4] However, finding legitimate and well-paying flexible work opportunities can be time-consuming and challenging. That's where FlexJobs comes into play.

The frustration of searching for these jobs led to the launch of FlexJobs.  Started in 2007 by founder Sara Sutton, the platform was created in response to the overwhelming number of job scams online.[5] Flexjobs aims to provide a safer, more efficient job search experience by hand-screening every listing before it goes live. Let’s take a look at how the platform works.

How FlexJobs Works

FlexJobs functions as a job board, but with a key difference: every job listing is reviewed and vetted by a team of trained researchers. This drastically reduces the risk of scams or misleading posts. Once you're a member, you can search for jobs using various filters, including location, schedule, job type, career level, and industry.

The platform also provides resources to improve your job search, such as:

  • Resume reviews
  • Career Coaching
  • Webinars
  • Skills testing
  • Articles and job search tips

When you find a job you're interested in, FlexJobs will guide you through the application process, either directly on their platform or on the employer's website.

5 Steps to Sign Up for FlexJobs

Getting started with FlexJobs is relatively straightforward. Our team found the onboarding process to be smooth and relatively intuitive. Here’s how it works:

1. Visit the Website – Explore the FlexJobs website and navigate to the Sign Up button located on the homepage.

2. Sign Up – Like most websites, you will need to create an account by entering your name, email address, and password.

3. Choose a Plan – After creating an account, you will be directed to a screen where you can select your subscription plan. These plans range from a 14-day trial to the annual full-access plan (more on these below).

4. Create Your Profile – Set up your profile by entering your resume, job preferences, and whether you are looking for 100% remote jobs, hybrid roles, or the option for remote work (but mostly work in the office).

5. Apply for Jobs – With a curated profile, you can start pursuing opportunities on the platform. For serious job applicants, you can start applying for jobs that meet your wish list right away. You'll gain access to the job listings immediately after subscribing. You can also set up custom job alerts to be notified when new opportunities are posted.

FlexJobs’s Fee Structure

FlexJobs is a paid service. Here’s a breakdown of their current pricing:

  • 14-Day Full Access Trial – You can cancel at any time within the first two weeks of using it, or simply let that period lapse when you are applying for jobs and start paying $23.95 per month to use the platform.
  • 3-Month Full Plan – For job searches focused on finding full-time work and aiming to secure a job within the next 90 days, this is a great option. The three-month plan starts at $9.95 per month or $29.85 (paid in full) and offers job alerts, advanced remote search filters, and webinars.
  • Annual Access Plan – If you think you might be using FlexJobs throughout the year for more freelance or contract work, you can opt for the yearly plan. This plan works out to be $5.95 per month or $71.40 (paid in full) and offers similar features to the 3-month plan.

While these fees might seem steep for a job board, FlexJobs says they help maintain the quality of listings and fund the research team that screens every post. FlexJobs also offers a satisfaction guarantee—if you’re not happy with the service, you can request a refund.

Pros of FlexJobs

  • Scam-Free Listings – FlexJobs' most significant selling point is its commitment to legitimacy. Every job undergoes a rigorous verification process. This can save you time and energy by only applying for top jobs.
  • Variety of Job Types – The platform offers something for nearly every career path, ranging from entry-level to executive-level positions. So, regardless of your current career stage, there is something for you.
  • Career Resources – You get access to resume reviews, career coaching, skills tests, and downloadable templates—all included in your subscription. Our team thinks access to these resources is extremely valuable.
  • Job Search Customization – With advanced filters and personalized job alerts, FlexJobs enables you to pinpoint roles that align with your needs and qualifications, making your job search more efficient and effective.

Cons of FlexJobs

  • Subscription Fee – Some previous users wish the fees had been advertised more prominently, which is why we highlight this as a con. While the fee supports the platform's high standards, it may be a barrier for job seekers on a tight budget. However, our team thinks the nominal fees might actually make you commit the time and effort it takes to land a new job. If you're looking for a free option, check out our alternatives below.
  • No Guarantee of Employment – Paying for a subscription provides access to listings, but securing a job still depends on your qualifications, timing, and effort. However, you can give yourself the best shot at remote work by applying to a bevy of high-paying jobs.
  • Non-exclusive Job Listings – You may occasionally find listings that are also posted on public job boards, although FlexJobs does verify these jobs just like any other posting on the site. The actual value lies in the curation of hard-to-find remote jobs exclusive to FlexJobs.

FlexJobs Review Methodology

Our team signed up for the 14-Day Full Access Plan and tested both the mobile app and desktop version. We explored the different features, using hands-on, real-world job-finding scenarios to better understand the user interface, ease of account opening, and feel of the job-search platform.

Alternatives to FlexJobs

If you’re not sure FlexJobs is the right fit, here are some alternatives to consider:

  • UpWork is a freelance marketplace where you can bid on projects across multiple industries.
  • We Work Remotely is a free platform that lists remote job opportunities from companies worldwide.
  • Remote.co is a job site with a focus on full-time remote and hybrid roles.
  • Indeed is a traditional job board that offers filters for remote and flexible work opportunities.
  • Fiverr is ideal for freelancers offering short-term gig services, such as graphic design or writing.

Smart Summary

FlexJobs is a premium job search service designed specifically for individuals seeking remote or flexible work opportunities. It sets itself apart by offering thoroughly vetted job listings, career coaching, resume help, and advanced search filters. Although it comes with a subscription fee, our team thinks the cost is worthwhile for the peace of mind, time saved, and a massive supply of vetted opportunities.
